I came to the conclusion whilst lay in bed at 7am, refusing to make the three steps over to my bathroom; they should call morning, “Mourning” as in- I’ll be mourning the loss of my bed for the rest of the day.
Being a parent it is a given you will lose more sleep than when you had no one depending on you. You knew as soon as you brought baby home from hospital; you could kiss bye-bye to lie-ins and lazy Sundays filled with endless bacon and coffee. Yes you knew, however, no one told you just how heart breaking it would be to leave your comfy, cosy little cocoon. I've got more bad news for you; it never gets easier! Two years later it is still difficult getting ready for work before the birds have even started singing!
Finding that perfect morning routine is very difficult but can make the world of difference and help you leave the “mourning” behind you. For the past two years I’ve tried various different morning routines. From preparing my outfits the night before, to setting my alarm a whole hour earlier than I need to be up- I’ve tried everything! Nothing ever seemed to work. I still found myself running for my bus to work.
When it comes to morning routines the question is; do you get yourself ready first and then wrestle with your child to get them out of bed and ready for nursery? Do you skip breakfast and wait until you have five minutes alone on the bus to cram your face full of cold, soggy toast? It has taken far too long for me to discover a routine that works for us and I could easily bet a tenner that my routine will probably change next week due to unexpected lie-ins and “snooze” incidents.
I’m definitely not a morning person and I do definitely mourn the loss of my bed at 6:30am every morning. I usually fill my mornings full of attempting to look human with copious amounts of concealer, and then have a mini break down towards my partner whilst rushing to get my son ready to leave the house. I’m usually always around five minutes late! Last week was different;
I couldn't believe the answer to my morning blues was always standing right in front of me! We decided to half the work. My half an hour lie in didn’t mean I was late, in fact I was exactly five minutes earlier than usual! Would you believe that splitting the work in half gives you so much extra time! Yes I know us mothers feel that we have to do everything and usually refuse any type of help, but realistically ladies we alone have ourselves to blame for feeling we do everything with no help at all. I couldn't believe that I left the house on time and even had time to stop and get myself some breakfast. I have my partner to thank for the extra time and a good healthy breakfast with no rush!
I’m almost one hundred percent sure your partner knows how to put a nappy on the right way, I’m positive he knows exactly how much tooth paste to place on the tooth brush and where to find the flannels! I have always thought it would save time and hassle for me to just do all the work. However I spend the majority of the morning rushing and forgetting half of the things I need to do. When you split the work there is a perfect balance and enough time to make yourself look like the star you are!
My better half got my son ready whilst I made myself look presentable and guess what? He did it perfectly. Our morning routine is now simple, quick and easy; I get myself ready and as a payment for the extra time to apply my mask- I drop my son off at nursery on the way to work! No cold toast, no need to apply make up with a catapult and no need to run around like a headless chicken.
I blame Wonder Woman for my unrealistic view of how much us women can cram into one day. Only a fictional character can beat crime whilst having fabulous hair and flawless make up at the same time!
I myself refuse help when it is offered. I like to think I can cope with all the work and I’m ashamed to say it’s because I feel things “won’t be done properly”. Accepting help has always been something I’ve found very difficult to do, this new morning routine has opened my eyes and made me realise that accepting help is like receiving a time machine! I still find it difficult to accept help with the house work and find myself polishing at 11pm! My aim is to start accepting help in all areas!
The moral to this little tale is; telling yourself that you can battle the early starts by yourself is only making you struggle. If you’re anything like me and find it difficult to leave your bed then you need the extra help to give you extra time to look fabulous. When your man offers his help; just take it. You may have longer than fifteen minutes to make yourself look like a beauty queen and pick your perfect “Taking on the admin world!” outfit.
